Mailbox Project
In March of 2017, the Shin Shin Youth Mailbox Program was established. This allowed students from the United States to communicate with those in China and become more proficient in both the Chinese and English language. At the same time they gained a better understanding of each other and build meaningful friendships.
These students have discussed a wide range of topics, from everyday things like school life and extracurricular to more uncommon topics like raising pets and celebrating holidays. Through this communication and discussion, each pair of pen pals has not only learned about each other but also gained further insight of what life is like on the opposite side of the world.
We’ve seen the students go through tremendous growth. At a surface level, they have corrected mistakes in their pen pal's emails and helped each other improve their language skills. Now, they can interact with each other more easily. But on a more personal level, these students are becoming more accepting of others: through these interactions, they’ve learned to look past differences on the surface and appreciate the value that others have.
