On Saturday December 9th, Shin Shin Youth Group members volunteered at RAFT (Resource Area for Teaching) in San Jose. Our tasks included counting and packaging popsicle sticks, die-cutting paper windmills, and packaging foam cubes.
When we arrived, a volunteer had us split between packaging popsicle sticks and die-cutting windmills. Our members took turns doing both activities. For the popsicle sticks, we had to count a hundred for each one, so it was very challenging. Each member had a different method to counting, but we all did it carefully. The die-cut machine was very interesting. First, you would put two pieces of paper on a die-cut board, and then you would roll it through the machine so the blades on the die-cut board would cut through the paper. If the blades became loose, you could hammer them back in. For the foam cubes, we packaged them in a four by six grid with different patterns, like flowers, rainbows, or hearts.
