The Northwood Park consists of a moderately sized playground and a large grass field that encompasses it. Thus, in order to continue in its efforts to create a healthier, more vibrant community, the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department (PRNS) hosted the Northwood Park Community Day, with the goal of providing cleaner, safer parks.
In hopes of aiding in these efforts, three Shin Shin Youth Group volunteers helped to shovel tambark into wheelbarrows that would then be used to place a new layer of tambark on the playground. Moreover, these volunteers also used cleaning solutions and graffiti removers alongside rags in order to adequately promote safer areas for children and others who visited the park. Additionally, in order to create a more visually appealing park, these respective volunteers helped to pick up litter scattered throughout and helped to weed overgrowth within the playground and the areas that surrounded it. Consequently, by completing such tasks, the volunteers were introduced to several new tools, ultimately facilitating a unique learning experience.
This service experience was extremely rewarding, as we were able see first-hand how our efforts benefitted a certain aspect of our community, and thus, made it an even more enjoyable experience. ------written by Alton
