The non profit organization, Sacred Heart Community Service, was founded in 1964 with the mission to build a poverty-free community. Over the years, Sacred Heart has directed projects and services, organized events, and gathered volunteers to support their developments in combating poverty.
Throughout the year of 2023, members of the Shin Shin Youth Group have attended and volunteered at multiple Sacred Heart events. On July 6th, Shin Shin volunteers joined Sacred Heart in their San Jose warehouse. The organization was hosting a service giving out fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, as well as clothing items to people facing economic hardship in the community. During the event, our volunteers helped distribute an assortment of fruits and vegetables, such as cucumbers, bok choy, and sweet potatoes to the visitors, ensuring that everyone was given an equal and appropriate amount of fresh produce. Volunteers also helped monitor visitors in the clothing section, offering support and making sure the visitors had a smooth and pleasant experience.
The participation of the Shin Shin volunteers not only made a meaningful impact on the fight towards a poverty-free community, but also brought enjoyment and fulfillment to the volunteers. Shin Shin will look forward to organizing and supporting more events with Sacred Heart in the future. ------written by Maggie
Everyone dreams of creating a society where each and every person is free from poverty but very few people can actually make it happen. Louise Benson, the founder of Sacred Heart, is one of those people. In 1964, She founded Sacred Heart Community Service to feed hungry families in her neighborhood. She saw that there were people in need, and instead of ignoring them, she decided to take action. Sacred Heart does much more than just feed families in need. They also support households that need energy and provided $3.1 million in payment assistance to over 8000 households in the bay area. In addition, they also provide many kids with free online learning. In addition, they provide assistance with rent, covid-relief, racial justice, urban gardening, and other services.
Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Sacred Heart and I decided to help them. At the site, I had the option to help with handing out clothes or food and I chose to help hand out clothes. While I was there, I saw just how many families there were that needed assistance, something that I had never noticed before. It made me realize how lucky I was to have all of my necessities given to me whenever I wanted them. Through this realization, I want to help other people and give back to the community. ------written by Andy
