Most people think volunteering is as simple and superficial as helping people to rack up more hours on your college applications. However, it’s much more than just that. Volunteering is heartwarming and enlivening. It’s when you can bring a smile on people’s faces and sprinkle joy into their lives. It’s when you can do something to open up a heart and change the world rather than sitting at home binging another episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
And volunteering is exactly what we do at the City Team every month. This Saturday, four volunteers from ShinShin Youth Group headed over to the City Team to help cook dinner for residents and guests there. They're Ethan Wang, Joyce Jin, Parker Shu, and Grant Han.

First, they started out with cracking eggs and pouring the egg yolk together in a big bowl. Then, they moved on to slicing up strawberries into quarter piece sizes and cutting up cantaloupe into bite-size chunks. Later on, for dinner, the strawberries they worked on went into each resident’s plate as a fruit portion. The cantaloupe and egg yolk were similarly made in preparation for the next day’s breakfast and dinner. Beyond their culinary tasks they helped out with rolling napkins around forks to make utensil sets. Finally, when the residents gathered for dinner, the four volunteers were ready to hand out the plates of food and offered seconds to those who desired. The tantalizing aroma of hearty beef chili brought delight to everyone present. As the shift at City Team came to an end, they helped clean up the kitchen by sweeping the floor and wiping down the tables.
(cracking eggs)
(Two boxes of some 500 eggs!)
(Slicing strawberries)
(Slicing Cantaloupes)
(Making utensil sets)
(Serving)
(All set and ready to roll)
(Handing out to residents and guests)
Through helping in the cooking, serving, and cleaning up process, the volunteers wrapped up another productive day. Now they also comprehend the profound truth that the keys to the heart are found in hearty cuisine and a genuine, affectionate spirit.
Well done and see you next time, Shin Shin volunteers!
