On the cold morning of February 2nd, I joined a small group of Shin Shin Youth Group volunteers to help out at the 4k Race to the Row in Santana Row, a bustling center for a variety of annual events and traditions. At around 7 am, we donned blue vests and began setting up bottled water to be given to the racers once they reached the finish line. When the first few runners came forward we were quite hesitant. Although we were ready with bottles in our arms, offering the bottles to them felt slightly awkward. As many more racers began trickling down the street towards us, we got used to casually reaching out and offering water to them. There were so many people in the midst of the race that we had to run back and forth while clinging onto several bottles. During this speedy process, I felt a rising spirit to continue to help out. I started to come back for bottles faster and faster. It took some work to reach every runner who came at us, but I accepted the challenge happily.
Even though I was just one of the many volunteers at this event, I felt like my contribution really made a difference because of the sheer number of people I reached out to. We were quite overwhelmed by the number of runners who came. It felt like a marching army approaching us! It was probably my first time encountering such a huge crowd, but the experience was rewarding. Most runners explicitly expressed their gratitude, which both comforted me and motivated me to continue to help out.
The community and environment in which we were volunteering were extremely open and friendly. I feel gratitude to the managers of the volunteering force in coordinating so many people together to produce a lively event that everyone can enjoy and benefit from. Although the morning conditions were bleak, this volunteering experience was rewarding and worthwhile. If given the chance and the time, I would definitely do this type of volunteer work again.
