On the morning of Sunday, August 25, a group of Shin Shin volunteers went to Village Harvest Cupertino Pear Orchard to pick pears. The pears that we harvested were given to Second Harvest Food Bank. It was very rewarding to know that we were providing nutritious fruit to families in need. The work was fun but arduous, especially with the sun beating down on our backs. Captain, a playful dog who lived on the property, led us to the pear trees further into the orchard and chased down pears that fell off their trees. We used fruit pickers to reach pears that were too high. It was my first time using a fruit picker, so I wasn’t very adept and I knocked down more pears than I actually put in my bucket. Village Harvest rules insisted any fruit that touched the ground was not fit to be donated. However, those pears did not go to waste! We were encouraged to take home any pears that fell on the ground, or which were culled out during the sorting process. Every volunteer left the orchard with big bags of pears to enjoy at home. I greatly appreciate Village Harvest’s generosity, not only in donating fruit to a food bank, but also for providing young people like me with a great opportunity to serve their community.
