3/1/2020 Sunday In the Park
Sunday in the Park is a weekly volunteer series hosted by the city of San Jose. Each week, the volunteer group goes to a different park to keep the park clean and healthy. On March 1st, the youth group members participated in Sunday In the Park at Kelley Park. It was a chilly morning, and there were about 50 youth volunteers at the event, coming from different youth organizations. We were given a brief training and were asked to pick a group task from a range of options, including picking up litter, removing graffiti and weeds, cleaning tree basins, trimming bushes, washing picnic tables, cleaning playground equipment, or painting curbing. We decided to try cleaning tree basins. The task was actually a lot harder than we had expected, as the weeds growing in the basin are dense and sturdy. However, with the five of us working as a team, it was actually quite fun. It felt great to be outdoors on a Sunday morning. One of the best attractions in Kelley Park is the Japanese garden, and we even got a chance to visit it and watch koi fish during our break. After three hours of hard work from all volunteers, the park definitely looked a lot cleaner and nicer. -Reported by Alice Feng |
