On September 8th, 2019, Shin Shin Youth Group’s volunteers went to Russian Ridge in San Mateo County to help with the maintenance of the reserve. The tasks that the volunteers performed included watering native species that have been reintroduced to the area and clearing invasive species in the fields. While watering the plants, we encountered a family of harvest mice. After the maintenance, the volunteers were given a tour near Pond Alpine and David C. Daniel Nature Center, which were near the area the volunteers were working at. In the nature center, the volunteers got to look at various furs of native animals and got the chance to meet and pet a rescued gopher snake named Snickers. This event is a very meaningful event as it protects California’s original habitat and its inhabitants.

During the afternoon of September 8, a group of Shin Shin Youth Group volunteers went to Russian Ridge Preserve to help Grassroots Ecology. Grassroots Ecology is an organization that helps restore native plants in open spaces, neighborhoods, creeks, and more. Russian Ridge Preserve is a regional park that is currently not open to the public. The Shin Shin Youth Group helped Grassroots Ecology by watering native plants and removing invasive plant species, such as mustard flowers and yellow star thistle. It was rewarding to find out how many bags of weeds we filled up. We saw many interesting sights, such as a family of mice between plants and different animal furs in a nearby nature center. For example, there were the furs of a grey fox, a skunk, and a rattlesnake. There were also different specimens of fossils displayed. The ranger in the center patiently explained to us that the female snake they had, Marshmallow, is a rescued snake who is 12 years old. She is a tame snake who has an injury in her jaw, so she can not swallow. Now, she can only eat frozen mice. Afterward, we walked on a trail around the pond. On the trail, there was a lot of shade provided by nearby trees. The pond contained many different species of animals and was surrounded by reeds. Not only was this event fun, but it was also nice knowing that we can help restore a regional park back to its original environment.
