On January 11th, 2020, a group of Shin Shin volunteers and their families participated in the Municipal Rose Garden Annual Pruning Day. In the year 2010, San Jose Municipal Garden was named “America’s Best Rose Garden,” beating more than 130 public rose gardens nationwide. Every year, volunteers gather at the garden to prune rose bushes just before the plant breaks dormancy so that better blossoms can be expected in the coming months. More than 400 volunteers from all over San Jose attended this year. Even the mayor of the City of San Jose showed up to thank the volunteers for their contributions.
Based on the instructions of experienced volunteers, we used prune shears and pruning saws to cut the branches of the bushes. Some branches were so thick that we needed to use both hands to grab the shear and make the cut with several attempts. With more and more branches cut, we were also busy carrying them away in wheelbarrows. It was fun to steer these wheelbarrows on the sidewalk and wet grass.
After about 3 hours of work, the Shin Shin volunteers finished pruning more than a dozen beds of rose bushes. The rose garden looked ready for another blossoming season.
It was so satisfying when we saw that the beautiful garden was put into a better shape with our help. The garden may not be named best in the nation this year, but for me, it will always be the best. I will definitely come back here in May to see the magnificent roses in full bloom. I will appreciate them one by one, knowing some of them are there because of my hard work this morning.
